Geography - Aglionby Wetlands Trip
As part of our Geography 'Rivers' topic and our Science 'Living Things and Their Habitats' topic Year 5 visited Aglionby Wetlands.
We looked at biodiversity in the area and even found a honeybee hive in a tree. We did a scavenger hunt for things like bones, feathers and nuts (eaten and not eaten). We also did pond dipping and found lots of different species. Finally, we went to the river and did a treasure hunt.
Arts Week
As part of Arts Week, Year 5 was visited by Abby Kilfedder for an afternoon to show us how to create art prints.
We created and drew our own designs inspired by nature and then printed our designs on paper and fabric. We were really proud of our work, and thank you to Abby for coming in!
Geography - Visit to River Caldew
As part of our Geography 'Rivers' topic, we did some fieldwork at our local River Caldew. We measured river width, depth and speed as well as doing kick samples to search for mini beasts. Then we finished off by doing some field sketches.
Design and Technology - Stitches
Year 5 have been making drawstring bags in D&T this half term. Before we start making our final bags, we've been practising different types of stitches.
PSHE - Images
In PSHE we looked at images of celebrities before and after airbrushing had been used. We discussed as a group what we thought were positive or negative attributes in the images.
Maths - Adding Decimals
In Maths, we used counters and place value tables to add and subtract numbers with decimals.
Computing - Crumbles
In Computing we have been learning how to connect and program LEDs and motors to a crumble (micro controller). We used a programming app to control the LEDs and motors.
Art - Self Portraits
In Art, we are using mixed media to create self portraits. We made poem portraits, then made backgrounds for our portraits using colour wash and mosaic techniques.
Art - Installation Art
In our Art lessons we have been learning about and creating our own installation art.
We were inspired by the installation artist Cai Guo-Qiang and we created our own installation art using explosions. We really enjoyed creating this!
We had a go at constructing our own installation art. We took everyday objects from around school and made interesting 3D installation artwork.
Design and Technology - Bread Making
We have been learning about bread making in our Design and Technology lessons. We have discussed why bread is important and learned about the different types of bread and what makes them different to each other.
Next we learned a basic bread recipe and followed this to make our own bread. After tasting our bread we talked about what we would like to add to our bread to make it different. Some of the suggestions were to add chocolate chips, dried fruit and cheese. We then chose in groups what extra ingredient we would most like to add and made our bread again, this time adding the extra ingredient. We really enjoyed tasting the final results!
PE - Primary Stars with Carlisle United
We have enjoyed working with Paul from Carlisle United. We have learned about lots of different sports and how to work together as a team.
Science - Melting
In Science, Year 5 have been investigating ice and melting. First we discussed what ice is and how it is formed, then we talked about the different ways ice can melt and which we thought would be faster or slower.
To test our theories, we split into groups and were each given an ice cube. Each group chose a different method of melting to test and we observed the different rates that each ice cube melted at. We documented our results by measuring the ice cubes as they melted and timed how long it took for each one to melt.
