Design and Technology - Bread Making

As part of our topic learning about different types of bread and how it fits into a balanced diet, we had a go at making our own!

First, we found a recipe which would show us the ingredients and steps needed to make bread and then followed those instructions. We each also decided on whether to add an extra ingredient such as chocolate chips to find out how it changed the taste and texture of our bread.

Art and Religion and Worldviews - Trip to Carlisle Cathedral

During our visit to Carlisle Cathedral we took part in two workshops to expand on our learning in both Art and Religion and Worldviews.

In the Art workshop, we studied the gargoyles and misericords and used them as inspiration to sketch our own designs. Then we created 3D models of our creations using clay. Click here to see more of our work and some of our finished models.

Our second workshop included a tour of the Cathedral where we learned about the history of the building and all the features which are special to Christian believers. Our favourite part was looking up at the beautifully painted ceiling and the stained glass windows. Click here to see more photos from our tour.

Design and Technology - Bread in a Balanced Diet

Year 5 have started a new topic in DT and are learning about different types of bread and the part bread plays in a balanced diet. We will be evaluating a range of different breads by taste, appearance and texture. We will also learn how different breads are made, follow recipes and instructions to create our bread before adapting and developing our own bread designs and flavours.

History - Anglo-Saxon Workshop at Tullie House

We recently spent a day at Tullie House where we got to learn all about the Anglo-Saxons as part of our History topic. The workshop was themed around a 'Kingdom Clash' game show with the winning team from each round gaining a coin. At the end, all the coins were counted to decide which kingdom emerged victorious.

Round 1 - Everyday Life: This round focused on the normal people in the Anglo-Saxon era, and the challenge was to match a series of artefacts to a riddle. Then the children looked at the different jobs and chores Anglo-Saxon people did.

Round 2 - Art and Culture: This round looked at the impact the Anglo-Saxons had on the world of art, and the challenge was to race to put together a jigsaw puzzle of an Anglo-Saxon artefact.

Round 3 - Language: During this round, the children looked at how the Anglo-Saxons have affected language as we know it. The main challenge was to create a poem called a Kenning which was then read to the rest of the group.

Round 4 - Religion: After a discussion of religion in the Anglo-Saxon era, the challenge was to complete a crossword against the clock and work out what word was hidden.

Round 5 - Anglo-Saxons vs. Vikings: The final round was a quick fire true or false quiz with questions about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. The answers were designed to tell the group more about the two connected cultures.
